Surprised by Claude
When AI starts behaving like good developers, it’s not just vibe
Let’s be honest, news about ChatGPT, AIs, etc. is beginning to wear thin. And, nevertheless, we know that soon there will be a very significant impact that will change how we earn our living, and by extension, how we live. And this was supposed to be an article titled: “welcome to the era of mediocrity in code.” Partly due to the poor quality of software in general, but also partly because of seeing that there’s a lot of vibe-coding, with readily apparent limits. But yesterday Claude surprised me, and today I’ve seen that it persists in this new paradigm.
Software quality
The basis for the article I was going to write would have consisted of various pieces of evidence showing, in general, the low quality of software. And, unfortunately, one doesn’t need to try very hard to find them. This trend isn’t new, it’s been apparent for some time. To the point that Jonathan Blow gave his talk “Preventing the Collapse of Civilization,” where he presents his thesis that if this trend continues, it will effectively lead to the collapse of civilization.
