Is The Subscription Model In Crisis?

During the last months, we have been reading news about how streaming services have reached a plateau in their growth. During the same time, we have also seen how the number of streaming services has multiplied. And because of all this, their catalog has shrunk and the prices have increased.

This article is not about them, it is about us.

With increasing prices and shrinking catalogs, we are now forced to choose what we want and what we will not watch.

Going one step further, it is also about rewarding what we like.

Many streaming services, like Spotify, pay to the creators by number of streams. So the more we listen to one song, the more we are rewarding that creator. That is a great way to promote the right kind of content that we love.

Almost every subscription platform works that way. The more we enjoy a creator’s work, the more we reward their creativity. It is not always as direct as Spotify, but our activity makes a definitive paper deciding what is worth and what is it not.

But that leaves us in a hard place.
